How to Use the Pace Calculator

Enter your total distance and your finish time, and the calculator will work out your average pace per kilometre or per mile. You can switch between metric and imperial depending on your preference or which unit your watch uses.

What to Do With Your Pace

Your average pace from a race or training run is a useful reference point, but it's important to understand what it represents. An average pace hides a lot of variation - most runners go out slightly faster than planned and slow through the second half. A consistent pace held across the full distance is generally more efficient than one that fluctuates significantly.

If you're using this calculator to set training paces, your race pace is a starting point, not a fixed target. Easy runs should be run meaningfully slower - typically 60 to 90 seconds per kilometre slower than your race pace - to develop aerobic fitness without accumulating excessive fatigue.

Planning Your Training Paces

Once you know your current pace, you can use it to establish training zones. The heart rate zones calculator and marathon time predictor on Endurance Toolkit can help you build a fuller picture of your current fitness and where to direct your training.
